About the Labor Solidarity Project
The Labor Solidarity Project at UW Tacoma (UWT) consists of faculty and students working to highlight labor studies in the curriculum, in research, and through community outreach. The Labor Solidarity Project has organized speakers, research programs, and additional curriculum to highlight and deepen our region’s understanding of its distinctive and proud labor history and to shape a future of economic justice and opportunity for all through community-engaged higher education.
Tacoma has long been identified as a labor town, and UWT has many working-class, and racially and ethnically diverse students. Since its inception in 1990, UWT has reflected its urban community and base of working, adult, and first-generation students. Established in 1994, the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences includes an interdisciplinary and intersectional major in Ethnic, Gender and Labor Studies, the only such major at the three UW campuses. With a campus established in the old downtown of Tacoma, UWT faculty have especially reached out to the labor and union community that shaped the heritage and continuing profile of the South Puget Sound.
The Labor Solidarity Project receives funding support from the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies.
