This is a part time position (50% FTE/20 hours a week).

Supporting research, teaching, and community outreach, the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies focuses on the contributions of workers and labor organizations to society. The Bridges Center promotes the study of labor in all of its facets - locally, nationally, and worldwide. Our mission is to develop labor studies, broadly conceived to include working people everywhere, as a central concern in higher education. The Bridges Center coordinates the efforts of faculty members across the University of Washington to develop and expand labor-related components of the University's curriculum and research. We also provide support and assistance to students studying work and workers via a Labor Studies minor, scholarships, research grants, event programming, and more. The Bridges Center is a meeting place where people from the academic world, the labor movement, and the wider community can share ideas and insights.

The Bridges Center has an outstanding opportunity for a permanent, half-time (50%) Communications Coordinator. Under the direction and supervision of the Center’s Associate Director, and in partnership with the Bridges Center’s faculty Director and two full-time program staff, this position will develop and implement the Bridges Center’s public communications, including but not limited to digital communications (email, website, and social media), publications (research reports and newsletters), and media relations. The Communications Coordinator will be responsible for planning and directing the strategic communication of information designed to keep the public informed of the Bridges Center’s programs, accomplishments, and objectives. This position also works to expand the awareness of the Bridges Center within the University and among prospective students.

Responsibilities will include:

Print and Digital Communications (50%) -

  • Develop and design communications for the Bridges Center, working directly with the staff and leadership to plan messaging, establish goals, objectives, and strategies.
  • Produce Bridges Center newsletters and other publications, including writing, editing, and design.
  • Develop story ideas, conduct interviews, write, edit, and proof feature stories for digital and print publication.
  • Develop and design digital communications for the Bridges Center, including website, email, and social media.

Promotion and Outreach (50%) - 

  • Develop and create publicity materials (programs, flyers, email announcements, social media posts) for Bridges Center events, including conferences, webinars and seminars, and the annual awards banquet.
  • Maintain mailing and email lists for events and other marketing materials.
  • Collaborate with Advancement officers to develop fundraising materials.
  • Maintain relationships with media outlets.

Funding for this position is currently guaranteed for two calendar years. The position is intended to be permanent, but its continuance after two years is subject to the renewal of funding sources.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communication, or related field and at least one year of related experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

 

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:

  • Command of, or willingness to learn, large mailing databases, desktop publishing, and website development.
  • Commitment to working with community organizations and labor unions as well as university constituencies, and to an inclusive, anti-discriminatory approach to teaching, administration, outreach, and learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to function both independently while exercising skill and informed professional judgment, and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including demonstrated competence in preparation of correspondence, written reports, and publicity material.
  • Must be highly organized and show a high level of attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in the use of MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe applications (Acrobat).

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in the program specialty, which may include but is not limited to experience with labor organizations, student groups, and policy-related institutions.
  • Experience working professionally with many constituencies, such as staff, faculty, students, alumni, community partners, vendors, media, and donors.
  • Experience with current digital content best practices, developing content for social media and websites.
  • Experience with visual content creation (e.g., photography, video, and graphic design).
  • Experience with Marketo, or similar email platform.
