Hasegawa has been an activist in the labor movement in Washington for 40 years. His service began as a worker in the trucking industry and as a member of the Teamsters Union, which he belonged to for thirty-two years. In 1991 he was elected head of the largest Teamsters general trucking union in the Pacific Northwest (Teamsters Local 174) and became a central figure in the groundbreaking reforms that workers were undertaking in the union and the labor movement in the 1990’s. From 2005 Hasegawa has been the representative for Washington State's 11th Legislative District, first in the House of Representatives (through 2012) and now as a member of the Senate. As a member of the Legislature, Hasegawa has served as a voice for working families, small businesses and disenfranchised communities.
