Javier Silva, the recipient of the Silme Domingo and Gene Viernes Scholarship in 2022-2023, collaborated on a research project with the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) to survey Yakima Valley families' perspectives on wildfire smoke health risks. 

Silva, Loftus and Karr worked on designing interventions to protect people in the Yakima Valley from wildfire smoke, but first they needed to better understand the experiences of families during dangerous smoke episodes. “This has been an important data gap,” said Loftus. Read the full article here.
